PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--Kathleen Payne drained a career-high 21 points to lead all scorers, and Dana Nucaro added her first double-double with 12 points and a game-best 10 rebounds, as the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team edged visiting Fredonia State 64-61 on Friday night at Memorial Hall. The Cardinals, who are 4-1 in their last five outings, improve to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. The Blue Devils drop to 2-11 and remain winless in the conference at 0-7.
Caroline Hourihan led the Blue Devils with 14 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Liz Wierbinski chipped in 12 points and two blocked shots. Jamie Warren contributed six rebounds.
Nora Campbell added nine points, nine rebounds and four blocks for the Cardinals, who outscored the Blue Devils by a 32-14 margin in the paint. One of Campbell's blocks came at the final buzzer on Carrie Bushnell's 3-point attempt to try to send the game into overtime.
After Plattsburgh started the second half with a nine-point bulge, Fredonia went on a 15-5 run over a 3:36 span to take its first lead at 44-43 on a trey by Wierbinski.
Fredonia eventually led by six points, 54-48 at the 6:11 mark, until Payne scored the Cardinals' next nine points to put them back ahead, 57-56, with 3:23 to go. Plattsburgh didn't trail after that.
Plattsburgh led by as many as 10 points with 4 minutes and 31 seconds to go in the first half before settling for a 30-25 lead at the break.
