Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's basketball team defeated visiting St. Mary's (Md.) 57-56 to move into first place in the Capital Athletic Conference standings on Wednesday night.  The Saints move to 4-1 in the league and lead the Seahawks, Mary Washington and York (Pa.) who are all deadlocked at 3-1.

Seniors Maame Amponsah, Amanda Billy and Beth Wiggins all scored in double-figures to pace the Saints in the win.  Amponsah posted a double-double with 10 points, including the game-winning layup with six seconds to play, to go with a game-high 21 rebounds.  Billy added 17 points and a team-high four assists while Wiggins chipped in 13 points to go with six rebounds and three blocks.

Marymount (6-5, 4-1 CAC) would control the opening half, leading by as many as eight on multiple occasions before taking a 24-19 lead in to the break.  Amponsah nearly posted a double-double in the stanza alone, grabbing 13 rebounds and scoring eight points.  The Saints outshot SMC 40.9 percent to 21.4 percent in the frame and outrebounded the Seahawks 29-8.

Opening the second half on a 9-2 run, St. Mary's (7-5, 3-1 CAC) grabbed the lead at the 16:51 mark to spark a fast-paced back-and-forth second period.  Trading leads 12 times and forcing six ties, the Seahawks led by as many as five before a layup by Jamie Roberts with 16 ticks on the clock game them a 56-55 lead. 

Fresh out of timeouts, the Saints marched the length of the court as Billy fed Amponsah in the low post.  Pivoting into the lane, Amponsah layed the ball in to give MU the one-point advantage before hustling back down court to block a final attempt by St. Mary's and seal the victory.

Roberts led the Seahawks and all scorers with 19 points while Pui Sham added 13 and Jasmine Jones chipped in 11.

Marymount returns to the hardwood on Saturday as it takes on Hood in CAC action in Frederick, Md.
