Carroll (MT) Hammers Whitworth in Second Half

Helena, Mont. -- Carroll College went to its strengths and outscored visiting Whitworth 43-22 in the second half of a 72-49 win over the Pirates in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday night at the Carroll P.E. Center.

Emily Travis led Whitworth (5-5) with 14 points, but the Pirates struggled to shoot and rebound against the taller Saints, especially in the second half.

Whitworth scrapped to within 29-27 at halftime, even taking a 22-16 lead after an 10-0 run. The Bucs hit on 36% (9-25) of their first half shots, including 3-6 from three-point range.

But Carroll used a 17-2 run early in the second half to break away from a 29-29 tie. Whitworth only made 22% (7-31) from the field after halftime and was 0-3 from beyond the arc as the Saints limited their long-distance opportunities.

For the game Whitworth made only 28% (16-56) from the field. Carroll outrebounded the Pirates 42-25 in the game.

Travis went 4-8 from the field, 1-1 from three-point range, and 5-9 from the free throw line. Emily Guthrie added nine points. Taylor (LaMoreaux) Taylor led the Bucs with five rebounds.

Alysha Green had a game-high 21 points to lead Carroll. Jeni Guertin added 14 points.

Whitworth will complete its trip to the Carroll College Classic with a game against Montana Tech on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m.
