Baldwin-Wallace Women Beats Wittenberg, 70-52, in Season Opener in Springfield

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior two-time All-OAC guard/ forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored 15 points and grabbed four rebounds as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated traditional rival Wittenberg University, 70-52, tonight (Tuesday, November 16, 2010) on the Pam Evans Smith Court in the Wittenberg HPE Center in Springfield.  The win marked sixth straight season opening win for Head Coach Cheri Harrer and the Yellow Jackets as well as eight straight over Wittenberg and fourth straight on the Tigers home court.

Schroeder, who now needs five points to become the 12th player in B-W history to score 1,000 points, was joined by junior forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/St. Mary Central Catholic) with nine points and a game- high of 12 rebounds while freshman guard/forward Jessica Lairson (Louisville) contributed nine points.  Wittenberg was led by Ashanta Robinson with a game-high of 18 points and Sarah Watson who contributed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. 

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on two baskets by Schroeder. B-W increased the lead to a first half high seven points for either team at 8-1 with 14:13 remaining.  The Tigers responded by using a 10-1 run to take their first lead of the half 11-9 at 11:26. The game would be tied once more in the opening stanza at 17-17 with 6:22 before Wittenberg would increase its lead to as many as six points in the half.  The Tigers outscored the Jackets 15-9  over the remainder of the period to lead 32-26 at the intermission.   B-W was led by sophomore guard Rachel Rossman (Olmsted Falls) with six points and Spisak with five rebounds.   Wittenberg was paced by Robinson with nine points and Watson with seven rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second half on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 34-34 with 16:53 remaining in the game. B-W  never looked back outscoring the tigers 36-18 throughout the rest of the half. B-W had it largest lead of the game at19 points with 35 seconds left in the game. Schroeder led the Yellow Jackets with 11 points and Spisak brought down five rebounds in the second stanza. 

The Yellow Jackets are back in action this weekend when they travel to Holland, Michigan to participate at the Hope College Tipoff Classic.  B-W opens up against Alma (Mich.) College on Friday, November 19 at 6:00 p.m. and then plays host and No.2-ranked Hope on Saturday, November 20 at 3:00 p.m.
