Rochester Defeats William Smith for Eighth Straight

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Melissa Alwardt scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Rochester to a 74-51 victory over William Smith College in the Louis Alexander Palestra.

She was the only double figure scorer for the Yellowjackets (8-1) who have won eight straight since losing their season opener at Medaille College in mid-November. Loren Wagner had nine points. Michelle Ketcham and Danielle McNabb scored eight points apiece.

Jacqueline Murphy and Kristen Kush posted double-doubles for William Smith (3-5). Murphy scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Kush had 12 points and 12 boards.

The Herons were ice-cold at the start, missing their first 18 shots from the field as Rochester build a 24-5 lead 12 minutes into the game. Mollie Danahy's layup broke the skein and came in the midst of a 9-0 run that got William Smith within 24-14 at 6:23. It was 38-20 at halftime.

Alwardt hit six of nine from the floor, five of seven outside the arc. She had two assists, one block, and two steals in 29 minutes. Rochester blocked 10 shots, three by Jodie Luther.

Nine days ago, Rochester defeated William Smith, 85-51, in the semifinals of the Wendy's Classic. The Yellowjackets are ranked No. 11 by d3hoops.com this week and No. 12 by the WBCA.
