Hemp, Edgewood College shut down Cougars in second half

MADISON, Wis. - The Edgewood College women's basketball team knew controlling Concordia University Chicago's leading scorer Marche Smith was a big key to the game. However after a big first period, the Edgewood College women's basketball team clamped down on Smith in the second half and showed off their balanced scoring attack in a 70-49 victory on Saturday at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.

After the Eagles opened up a 6-2 lead on a free throw by Alison Tobin. Smith put the Cougars in front with her own personal 10-2 run, scoring every point for Concordia Chicago. In fact, Smith scored her team's first 16 points of the game, but the Eagles used a 12-2 run to grab a 23-16 lead. Shae Beckwith and Danielle Dixon knocked down jumpers to spark the rally and #Sadie Ewing capped it with a runner in the paint. The Cougars cut the lead to 23-22 with 1:48 left in the half, but Amber Hemp hit the first of her three three-pointers and the Eagles carried a 29-24 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Eagles cooled off Smith and heated up on their own end of the floor. Tobin scored the first two buckets of the half and the Eagles soon pulled out to a 41-29 lead. Meanwhile, Edgewood College was containing Smith, a fourth team preseason All-American, on the other end. After tallying 20 points in the first half, Smith had just one field goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half. She finished with a game-high 27 points.

Meanwhile, Hemp was making sure the Cougars would not be getting back into the game. With Edgewood College (4-2, 3-0 NAC) holding a 48-37 lead, the senior guard scored 12 consecutive points for her own personal 12-0 run to essentially put the game away at 60-40.Hemp made a pair of three-pointers, a fast break layup and three free throws in a three-minute stretch. Edgewood College's lead would climb as high as 24 at 66-42, before settling on the 70-49 verdict.

Hemp finished with a team-high 15 points on 4-for-9 shooting, while Sadie Ewing scored nine of her 12 points in the second half. Melanie Walker scored seven of her 11 points at the free throw line, while Tobin grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds. Edgewood College made 14 of 20 free throw attempts in the second half and shot 62.9 percent from the field. The Eagles defense forced 35 Cougar turnovers.

No other Cougars reached double figures besides Smith, although Katie Leitermann grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Concordia University Chicago (1-4, 0-3 NAC) shot just 29.2 percent in the second half.
