Simpson rolls against Dubuque in IIAC opener

INDIANOLA - Putting up more than 90 points for the second game in a row behind five players in double figures, Simpson cruised to a 96-69 win over Dubuque in the Iowa Conference opener Wednesday night.

Mindy Hutchcroft and Ali Sokol scored 14 points each, leading a balanced attack by the Storm (3-3, 1-0 IIAC). Sokol made good on 10 of 12 free throws and helped Simpson dominate play under the basket, as the Storm outscored Dubuque 46-22 in the paint.

Kelsie Reeves came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points, as Simpson's reserves outscored the Dubuque bench, 49-20. Cathy Kain added nine points and Kate Nielsen had nine with four rebounds.

A 3-pointer by Jessica Jentz helped the Spartans (1-4, 0-1 IIAC) tie the game at 24 with 6:37 left in the first half, but Simpson answered with a 21-3 run over the next four minutes, 20 seconds in opening an 18-point edge.

Simpson led 47-33 at halftime and led by as much as 34 in the second stanza, winning its 14th-consecutive game against Dubuque.

Dubuque's Mollie Whiting led all scorers with 19 on 8 of 14 shooting.

Simpson shot nearly 50 percent from the field and went 8-for-20 from beyond the arc. Amy Hamilton led the charge from distance, hitting three treys.

Stacey Schutjer scored 10 points, Hamilton and Reeves each handed out five assists and Jeni Hegstrom pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

Hutchcroft ended a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and had five steals.

The Storm travel to Coe on Saturday for an early-season showdown between the Iowa Conference favorites. The two teams split their regular season meetings a year ago before Simpson triumphed in the IIAC Tournament Title game. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. in Cedar Rapids.
