#11 Mount Union Wins Woodcliff Invitational

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Tournament MVP Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) had 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals in leading the 11th-ranked Mount Union women's basketball team to a 68-56 win over host St. John Fisher (N.Y.) in the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Invitational championship game on Sunday.

Kori Wiedt (North Olmsted/North Olmsted) and Megan Saunders (Lakewood/Lakewood) added 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Purple Raiders. Amanda Rose (Uniontown/Green) grabbed seven rebounds.

Mount Union used a pair of runs to take a 31-26 halftime lead.

Down 20-15, the Raiders scored seven straight points. Saunders put in a layup, LaMattina hit a jumper and then Taylor Hartung (Canton/Massillon Perry) nailed a go-ahead three-pointer.

The visitors went on another seven-point stretch before the intermission. Brittany Kilgore (Northfield/Nordonia) and Saunders made two free throws apiece before LaMattina scored on a free throw and layup to give Mount Union a 31-24 advantage.

Led by Wiedt's seven points, the Raiders outscored St. John Fisher, 13-3, to open the second period and built a 44-29 lead with 14:38 remaining in the contest.

A three-pointer by Wiedt triggered another seven-point streak by Mount Union, which expanded the Raider advantage to 55-35.

Mount Union eventually built its lead to 68-44 before the Cardinals (1-2) scored the game's final 12 points.

LaMattina, Kilgore and Wiedt were named to the All-Tournament Team along with St. John Fisher's Colleen Maloney and Kristi Jeffres.

On Sunday, Maloney had 16 points while Jeffres contributed 12 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Cameryn Buckner added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

In the tournament's consolation game, Union (N.Y.) defeated D'Youville (N.Y.), 64-49.

The Raiders (3-0) will return to action on Wednesday when they host non-conference foe Wittenberg. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
