Whitworth Upsets Col. of Idaho for First Win

CALDWELL, Idaho -- Kayla Johnson scored eight points during a 10-0 Whitworth run over the final four minutes to spark the Pirates to a come-from-behind 63-59 win over host College of Idaho on Friday night at the Lady 'Yote Classic.

The Pirates (1-2) won for the first time this season by upsetting the defending champions of the Cascade Collegiate Conference. The Coyotes fell to 4-3.

Johnson (Fr., Colfax, Wash.) scored a career-high 26 points by making 9-13 shots from the field and going 7-7 at the free throw line. She made three baskets during the final 10-0 run, then hit the clinching free throws with five seconds left. Johnson also had four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Taylor (LaMoreaux) Taylor (Jr., Brewster, Wash.) added 10 points and six rebounds for the Pirates. Jamie Lyons (Fr., Kennewick, Wash.) had seven rebounds as Whitworth outboarded College of Idaho 36-32.

The Pirates trailed by as many as seven points early (12-5) and by four (34-30) at halftime. Johnson hit her only three-pointer to give Whitworth its first lead (45-44) of the second half. The Bucs led 49-48 after a basket by Kendra Lahue (Fr., Nine Mile Falls, Wash.) with just over ten minutes left. But the Coyotes outscored Whitworth 11-4 over the next six minutes to appear to take control with a 59-53 lead with four minutes left. They would not score again.

Nicole Bruce led C of I with 19 points and eight rebounds.

Whitworth will take on Westminster (Utah) on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. (MST). The Griffons defeated defending NWC champion George Fox 50-41 in the first game of the Lady 'Yote Classic on Friday.
