Yellowjackets Open With Big Win

The Yellowjacket women's basketball team, a week removed from their exhibition game against the University of Wisconsin, came out in their regular season opener and looked like a team that took some notes and learned a few things from their short time with the Badgers.   From the opening tip-off to the final buzzer, the Yellowjackets controlled the game, overwhelming St. Scholastica on their way to an 86-62 victory at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

The win marks the second time in the last three seasons that the Yellowjacket women have opened the season with a win over St. Scholastica.  The 86 points scored are the most since they put up 83 on Bethany Lutheran on November 18, 2008.  The last time the Yellowjackets hit the 86-point mark was December 7, 2002 in a 90-86 loss to UW-Whitewater.

The Yellowjackets scored on their opening possession and never looked back, surging to a 38-25 lead by halftime, shooting 44.4% from the field including 2-6 from 3-point range.  The Yellowjackets were a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.  Senior Kelsey Thingvold (Crystal, Minn.), junior Bri Davis (Hermantown, Minn.) and sophomore Kailee McDonald (Cambridge, Minn.) led the way with seven points apiece in the first half.

In the second half it was more of the same, as the Yellowjackets shot even better from the floor, at a clip of 55.6% and hit three more shots from beyond the arc, finishing 5-14.  Davis added nine more points in the second half, finishing with a team-high 16.  She also had five rebounds.  Thingvold was right on her heels with 15 points and a team-high eight boards.  In addition to Davis and Thingvold, McDonald, Hailey Hart (Osseo, Wis.) and Kaitlyn Houser (Zimmerman, Minn.) also hit double figures in points.  Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis.) led the Yellowjackets with nine assists.

Bri Allen and Savanna Treichel led the Saints with eight points apiece.
