Lady Jackets Rally, But Fall 60-56 at Wilmington College

More news about: Defiance

The Lady Jackets have come from behind to claim a late lead in both of their first two contests. Both games have resulted in four-point losses. Wilmington scored 10 points over the final 2:40 to hand DC a 60-56 loss, and drop the Lady Jackets to 0-2 on the season.

The Jackets took an early 8-7 lead by hitting their first-four field goal attempts of the game, but the Quakers, after missing their first shot of the game, proceeded to connect on their next seven field goals to take an 18-10 lead after nine minutes of action. Defiance posted a respectable 33.3 shooting percentage in the first half, but went into halftime with a seven-point deficit as the Quakers picked up 13 points off turnovers and outscored DC by a margin of 20-6 on points in the paint.

After the Quakers took a game-high 11-point lead early in the second half, Defiance stepped up its defense and went on an 18-3 run that resulted in a four-point advantage with 8:40 remaining. The two teams battled back-and-forth over the next five minutes before a free throw by WC's Bethany Ahrens at the 3:22 mark tied the game at 50 points apiece. Wilmington would find its way to the free throw line nine times over the last three minutes, and hit seven-of-nine shots from the charity stripe to pull out the victory in front of its home crowd and avenge its loss to Defiance in last season's Pro Rehab – Hubbard Co. Tournament Championship Game.

Kim Comden led Defiance with 10 points in the game, while Rachel Ciminillo pulled down a career-high six boards to lead the team in rebounding.

The Yellow Jackets will stay in Wilmington to play in the Hampton Inn & Suites/Damon's Grill Tip-Off Tournament Consolation Game tomorrow afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
