ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In the opening round of the Chuck Resler Tournament at the University of Rochester, the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team lost to Montclair State University, 72-65, on Friday afternoon. Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.

A three-point game at the half, the Knights fell into a nine-point deficit during the first six minutes of the second half. A mini 6-0 run brought the Mount to within three, and then, after an exchange of buckets, junior Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at 46 with just under twelve minutes to play.

A three-pointer by junior Beth Deer (Guilderland, N.Y.) gave the Mount the lead at the 11:11 mark, but Montclair State would take over from there. The Red Hawks went on a 16-4 run to seize an 11-point advantage with just under four to play. The Knights would get as close as three in the final minute, but free throws by freshman Theresa Towns (Morristown, N.J.) sealed the deal for Montclair State.

Junior Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) led the Mount with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Horvers connected three times from long range and finished with 16 points. Senior Jess Tice (Altamont, N.Y.) finished with 12 points on just 4-of-14 from the floor, while Deer pitched in with 11 points.

Towns led the way for the Red Hawks with 17 points. Senior Kisandra Ayanbeku (Brockton, Mass.) contributed 15 points and 7 rebounds.

Montclair State was very efficient with their offense, connecting on 53-percent from the field, a high percentage against the normally stingy Knights. Mount Saint Mary shot 49-percent for the contest. Turnovers were even at 17, while the Red Hawks held a 27-24 edge on the glass.

Mount Saint Mary will take on Ithaca College in tomorrow's consolation game at 3:00 p.m. Montclair State challenges fifth-ranked University of Rochester in the championship game at 6:00 p.m.
