Successful opener for Wartburg

WAVERLY – Wartburg College placed three players in double figures en route to a 70-58 win over Gustavus Adolphus College of St. Peter, Minn., Nov. 15.

Coach Bob Amsberry's Knights trailed their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents 10-0 less than three minutes in. Wartburg battled back and took a 17-15 lead with 12:46 to go. The Knights and Golden Gusties went back and forth before a 10-2 run in the waning moments of the first half gave the home team a lead it wouldn't surrender.

Sophomore guard Abi Weidemann of Iowa Falls led the way in scoring with 17 points. Senior guard Samantha Harrington of Nashua added 14 and canned three treys. Sophomore forward Maddie Sadekcy of Iowa City added 10 points. Other highlights from Amsberry's crew came from junior forward Emily Timmermans of Vinton with 10 rebounds, part of a 34-25 edge on the glass, five assists from Harrington, and four steals from junior guard Stephanie Reiter of LaPorte City.

The Knights travel to Platteville, Wis., Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 20 and 21, for the UW-Platteville Pioneer Classic. Wartburg takes on the host Pioneers at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Concordia University of Mequon, Wis., at 12 p.m. Sunday.

Notes – The victory was the Orange and Black's first in a season opener since 2007-08. … Wartburg returns home Saturday, Nov. 27, for a non-conference game against Grinnell of the Midwest Conference.
