Griffins Collect AEC Win with Ease against Mighty Macs

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (1/20/2024) - Gwynedd Mercy University (10-8, 3-2) trailed Immaculata University (8-10, 1-4) in the early-going of today's Atlantic East Conference (AEC) contest by as many as six points, 11-5 (15:06), but the Griffins took the lead on a tough layup from freshman guard Mazen Sayed (Chichester, Pa.) (18-16, 9:35), led 33-21 (0:58) at halftime, and played the second half with the game never truly in jeopardy for a 74-58 league victory over the Mighty Macs. Junior guard Aquil Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) led three Griffins in double figures with 17 points, while junior forward Mike Marable (Philadelphia, Pa.) gave Immaculata University problems all night long with eight points, a team-high 11 rebounds, four assists, a block, and two steals.

Griffin Highlights

  • Following the Sayed layup, Gwynedd Mercy University enjoyed a 15-5 run to intermission. The Griffins forced the Mighty Macs into 15 first-half turnovers and held them to 7-of-23 (.304) shooting to overcome a 23-17 rebounding deficit.
  • Stewart scored a dozen (12) of his 17 points in the first half. He finished the game 7-of-14 (.500) from the field and 2-of-2 (1.000) at the free throw line with four assists and three steals.
  • Senior guard Aziz Parker (Westampton, N.J.) recorded 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
  • Junior forward Dom Thomas (Mullica Hill, N.J.) provided 12 points, six rebounds, an assist, and a block.
