Grinnell men post 6th-highest point total in program history in 166-95 victory over Andrews

GRINNELL, Iowa - It may have been cold and snowy outside, but the action in Darby Gymnasium was plenty hot.

Grinnell College's men's basketball team posted its sixth-highest point total in program history while knocking off Andrews University of Michigan 166-95 in a Friday matinee. At 12-3, the Pioneers are off to their best start since the 2011-12 season.

The Pioneers' 71-point margin of victory ranks seventh in program history, and the 85 points in the second half is ninth-best all-time.

Grinnell made 40 treys in the contest, tied for second in program history with last year's total against Emmaus Bible College. The team attempted 92 shots from 3-point land, which also ranks second.

Kai Te Huki '27, who scored a career-high 41 points in Wednesday's win over Beloit College, shattered that figure with a 51-point output on Friday. He was 15-of-31 from 3-point land, which put him fifth in program history for treys made in a game and the most since 2017. He also had a career-high two blocks.

David Bluder '25 came up big, too, scoring 24 points with the aid of six treys. He had a career-best nine overall field goals. Sean Murphy '26 and Ryan Tarighi '27 were also in double figures with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

In all, 16 Grinnell players found the scoring column and 13 made at least one 3-pointer.

Jordan Ryan '24, Sean Walser '26 and Jack Ruhanen '25 grabbed five rebounds each, while Zach Rosen '26 dished out seven assists and Gabe Garcia '27 added five. Jordan Lee '27 added three steals, as did Tanner Deal '27. Dean's steals figure was a career-best.

The contest was never in question, as Grinnell broke out to a 9-0 lead not even two minutes into the contest. Te Huki opened the game with a 3-pointer, Rosen scored on a layup, Te Huki added another trey and Ryan made a free throw.

After Andrews closed within four, the Pioneers got a trey from Murphy, two free throws by Tolu Johnson '25 and a 3-pointer from Bluder for a 19-7 lead. The visitors never got within single-digits again as the Pioneers pulled away for an 81-35 halftime lead.

Andrews fell to 1-10 with the loss.

The Pioneers have the weekend off before traveling to Monmouth College next Wednesday for a Midwest Conference contest. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
