Quakers Kick off New Year with ODAC Victory

The Guilford College men's basketball team kicked off 2024 with a road trip to Virginia to visit the Eagles of Bridgewater College in an ODAC matchup. In a hot shooting affair from both squads, the Quakers offense was superior in a 72-62 win.

Both teams kept at each other's heels in the opening 10 minutes, before the visitors slightly pulled away with an 8-3 run. Rob Littlejohn made one of Guilford's five threes in the first period. The Eagles caught fire soon thereafter with a 12-3 run of their own, making four of five field goals, while forcing three turnovers from the Quakers. At the 5:54 mark, Bridgewater led by four (28-24).

From there, Guilford turned the game around quickly. Star guard Tyler Dearman scored six of his 13 first half points, and the Proctor brothers scored 10 amongst them, en route to the halftime lead, 40-33. Both squads shot the ball effectively, at a cumulative 55.5 field goal percentage.

The Quakers opened the second half with a 12-3 run, eight of those scored by Dearman, whose point tally rose to 21 points with 13:29 left in the period. By this time, both offenses completely cooled, going scoreless for the next five minutes.

Guilford's lead grew to as large as 18 with 6:23 left in the game, as the visiting team maintained control over the Eagles. Despite a late-game surge from the home side, the Quakers slowed the pace and capitalized on drawn fouls with made free throws. 72-62 was the final score, as Guilford won its third straight, and first of 2024.

Dearman recorded a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds, along with three steals. Luke Proctor and Julius Burch were the other Quakers in double figures, with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

As a team, Guilford shot 24-50 from the field (48.0%). The Quakers were effective in the free throw department, making 16 to Bridgewater's seven. GC also dominated in points off turnovers (26-10).

Guilford remains on the road up north for another ODAC contest on Saturday, January 6, facing off against the Eastern Mennonite Royals. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
