Big First Half Propels Hopkins to 88-78 Win at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team shot a scorching 70 percent from the field in the first half to build a 55-33 lead en route to an 88-78 win at McDaniel Tuesday night. The Blue Jays improve to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference while the Green Terror fall to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in the conference.
 
Hopkins raced out to a 14-point lead early, making eight straight baskets after missing its first two. Sidney Thybulle punctuated the opening run with a dunk to put JHU up 22-8 at the 13:59-mark. The teams traded scores over the next four minutes and the lead was 13. A Brian Johansson layup sparked a 10-1 Blue Jay run as their lead ballooned to 22 with 7:37 to play in the first. The teams went back-and-forth over the remainder of the half and Hopkins took a 55-33 lead into the break.
 
The lead continued to see-saw up and down over the opening 12 minutes of the second as the Blue Jays and Green Terror swapped scores. Hopkins led 73-55 on a John Windley bucket in the paint. Jonas Sujeta then made three consecutive threes, sandwiched around a triple from Windley, and the lead was down to 12 with 3:20 to play. Colin Crothers answered with a jumper, followed by a Johansson three-pointer and just like that Hopkins led 81-64.
 
Lorin Hall answered with a jumper to ignite a 12-1 Green Terror run that saw the home team slice the deficit to just six with 47 ticks on the clock. That's as close as McDaniel would get however as Brayden Fagbemi and Johansson went a combined six-of-six from the line to secure the win.
 
Windley led Hopkins with a career-high-tying 23 points, going 9-of-14 from the field, including 5-of-9 from downtown. Carson James poured in 19 points, with 15 coming from three-point range. Fagbemi handed out a game-high six assists, to go with 11 points and five rebounds. Thybulle finished with a game-high 11 rebounds and added three assists and six points. Johansson also scored in double figures with 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Sujeta led all scorers with 26 points, going 8-of-14 from three-point. David Kearney scored 12 points and Hall added 10 to go with three assists.
 
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, December 2 as the Blue Jays host the Muhlenberg Mules. Tip-off at Goldfarb Gym is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
