Case Western Reserve University junior guard Sam Trunley led all scorers with a career-high 24 points off the bench to help the ninth-ranked Spartans defeat Capital University 94-87 in a matchup of previously undefeated teams on Wednesday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

The Spartans improved to 5-0 with the win, while Capital dropped to 6-1 following the setback. CWRU extended its winning streak in non-conference regular season games to 25 consecutive contests.

Trunley finished the game shooting five-of-11 overall, with all five of his made shots coming from behind the three point line, and went seven-of-eight from the free-throw line. He added four rebounds, three assists, and a steal off the bench for the Spartans.

Junior forward Umar Rashid scored 14 points with five assists and four rebounds, graduate student guard Anthony Mazzeo added 12 points with five assists, and graduate student guard Preston Maccoux finished the game with 11 points.

The Spartans jumped out to an early seven-point lead, going ahead 15-8 with 15:26 remaining in the opening half on a three-pointer by Rashid. However, the Spartans went the next four minutes without a field goal, as the Comets went on a 14-4 run to go ahead 22-19 with 10:39 remaining in the period. Capital went on to lead by as many as eight points during the frame, taking a 31-23 lead with 5:55 to play in the half, but the Spartans battled back, tying the game at 35-35 on a three by Trunley with 3:01 on the clock, and went in front on a pair of free throws by Trunley with 2:40 to go. It was part of a 20-4 run over the final 4:16 of the half by the Spartans, as Trunley connected on a three at the buzzer to give CWRU a 48-39 advantage heading into halftime.

CWRU shot 55.6% overall and six-of-12 from three-point range in the opening half including 11 points off the bench from Trunley in the first 20 minutes.

The Spartans increased their lead early in the second half with a 14-0 run that saw the team's advantage grow to 71-50 on a three-pointer by senior forward Hunter Drenth with 12:53 remaining in the game. A run by the Comets cut the Spartans' lead back to 10, 73-63, with 9:52 left, and Capital continued to chip away at the deficit,, cutting it to a two-point game with under four minutes left. However, a three-pointer by Maccoux with 3:15 to play made it a two-possession game again, and after a basket by the Comets, Kahl and Trunley each followed with threes of their own to put CWRU ahead 90-81 with 2:05 left. The Spartans maintained at least a four-point lead the rest of the way, and free throws in the final 30 seconds by Rashid and Trunley helped CWRU secure the seven-point win.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 44.4% overall, 39.4% from three-point range, and 83.3% from the free-throw line. CWRU's bench outscored Capital 42-22 in the game.
