Hope tops Wilmington, reaches 1,700-win milestone

The Hope College men's basketball team rode a fast start to a milestone victory Friday night at its Thanksgiving Classic at DeVos Fieldhouse.

The Flying Dutchmen reeled off 14 straight points early in the game to take a 16-3 lead, and went on to defeat Wilmington (Ohio) College 92-68 for their 1,700th win in school history, becoming just the fourth NCAA Division III school to reach that plateau. Hope is now 2-0 to start the season.

Only Wittenberg (Ohio) University, the College of Wooster (Ohio) and Illinois Wesleyan University have more wins all-time than Hope, which now has an all-time record of 1,700-823.

"We were ready to go," head coach Greg Mitchell said after the game. "I think last year there were times where we just felt like we played in mud to start the game. We worked really hard on taking advantage of those first minutes and tried to throw some significant punches defensively."

Hope hit 7 of its first 10 shots from the field while holding the visiting Quakers to a 1-for-9 start.

Wilmington cut the Hope lead to 24-15 midway through the first half, but the Dutchmen came back with another flurry – this time a 13-2 run to open up a 37-17 lead. Hope led 47-29 at the half, shooting 63.6 percent from the field (21 of 33) in the first 20 minutes, while limiting Wilmington to 35.7 percent (10 of 28).

"I thought we defended really well," Mitchell said. "The ball was moving, shots were falling, so you feel good about yourself. It was collective – moving the ball, inside, outside, (our) zone (and) man offense were both really efficient."

Hope never let Wilmington get back in the game, building up a 29-point lead with less than five minutes remaining and coasting to the win. The Dutchmen finished the game shooting 54.2 percent (32 of 59) from the field and outrebounded the Quakers 46-28.

Sophomore guard Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan/Rochester Adams) led four Hope players in double figures with a career-high 16 points in 20 minutes of action off the bench. He also grabbed five rebounds.

"He put in so much time over the summer," Mitchell said of Mims. "Everything that's happened for him is well-deserved. He has earned the jump he has made. We always said the freshman-to-sophomore jump is very significant, and he's the guy who's made that jump."

Junior center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan/Grand Rapids Catholic Central) had his second straight double-double performance with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Fifth-year senior guard Clayton Dykhouse (Zeeland, Michigan/Zeeland East) added 11 points and dished out six assists, while senior forward Tanner Wiegerink (Holland, Michigan/West Ottawa) chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.

Matthew Dugue led the Quakers with 12 points.

Hope faces Concordia University of Wisconsin, who lost 73-65 to Calvin University Friday in Grand Rapids, on Saturday afternoon at DeVos Fieldhouse as the Thanksgiving Classic comes to a close. Tip-off is 3 p.m.
