GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) hit four three-pointers for 12 points playing in his home state while senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) filled the stat sheet with eight points, a season-high nine rebounds, seven assists and two steals as the second-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team concluded the regular season with a 61-58 ODAC victory at No. 14 Guilford on Saturday afternoon to extend its win streak to 22 games.

How it Happened:

  • The Quakers jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead before a 13-0 run by the Yellow Jackets was highlighted by a three-pointer from Coble as the Yellow Jackets took a 15-5 lead with 11:25 remaining in the first period. Following a GC free throw, freshman Jabril Robinson (Derwood, Md./South Kent Prep) buried a trey to give R-MC an 18-6 advantage with 10:40 left. The Quakers scored seven straight before a triple by sophomore Vincent Payne (Frederick, Md./St. Maria Goretti) stopped the streak and sparked a 10-1 spurt that was finished with a pair of layups by senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) as the Yellow Jackets led 28-14 with three minutes remaining. Coble nailed a trey with 30 seconds left and junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) had a layup just before the horn as R-MC held a 40-23 lead at intermission. Coble hit three treys for nine points, while Mallory, Talbert and Robinson all scored eight.
  • GC had the first bucket of the second half before a Coble triple made it 43-28 one minute in. Robinson hit a jumper to make it 45-27 before the Quakers used a 17-1 run to pull within two at 46-44 with 11:50 remaining. Mallory hit two free throws, junior Lance Johnson (South Riding, Va./Freedom) sank a jumper and freshman Keishawn Pulley, Jr. (Louisa, Va./St. Christopher's) made a trey as part of a 7-1 spurt as the Yellow Jackets led 53-45 midway through the period. GC pulled to within four before Mbangue had a layup and a pair of free throws to put the visitors up 57-49 with 6:30 left. The Quakers had a 9-2 run to make it a one-point game at 59-58 with three minutes left. Pulley hit two free throws with 17.9 seconds left to put R-MC up 61-58. GC missed a pair of three-point attempts in the final seconds as the Yellow Jackets held on for the victory.

By The Numbers:

  • Mallory had three blocked shots to give him 261 for his career, a program and ODAC record. He has had at least one block in each game this season.
  • R-MC had two players score in double figures. Coble tallied 12 and Robinson added 10.
  • Mallory has 1,395 career points to pass Stan Trimble (1962-66) and moved into 15th place on R-MC's career scoring list.
  • Talbert has 1,207 career points. He moved past Pat Holland (1988-91) into 32nd place on R-MC's career scoring list.
  • Talbert had seven assists and Mbangue dished out three.
  • Talbert has 343 career assists, putting him in 10th place on the program's career assists list.
  • R-MC outrebounded GC 35-30. Talbert topped the team with nine boards, while Mallory grabbed eight and Mbangue collected seven.
  • Mallory has 801 career rebounds, moving past Joey Allen (1973-77) into sixth place on R-MC's career rebounding list.
  • Talbert led R-MC with two steals.
  • Talbert has 183 career steals, the fourth-highest total in program history.

For the Record:

  • The Yellow Jackets extended their win streak to 22 games. R-MC has won 35 straight ODAC contests over the past three seasons and is 65-2 in conference contests over the past five seasons.
  • R-MC improved to 9-1 against regionally-ranked opponents.
  • R-MC secured its 17th ODAC regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed in the 2023 ODAC Tournament in Salem, Va.
