ELMIRA, NY - The Alfred University men's basketball team dominated in the second half as part of an 85-61 win over Elmira College on Saturday afternoon from the Speidel Gymnasium.

The Saxons (13-4, 8-2 Empire 8) outscored the Soaring Eagles (3-13, 2-7 Empire 8) by a 50-31 margin in the second half while forcing 11 turnovers.

Alfred University was led by Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), who had a double-double performance that consisted of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Robby Hicks (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) scored a career-high 18 points off the bench to go with two rebounds. Kevin Durkin (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph's Collegiate) added 10 points and four boards for AU.

"Our guys did a great job for the last five minutes of the first half and the first five minutes of the second half," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe said. "I was really proud of their resiliency."

The Soaring Eagles set the tone in the opening minutes of the first half, scoring seven quick points to put the Saxons into an early deficit. Alfred University relied on Marshall, who scored six of the team's first nine points. Consecutive three-point shots from Marshall gave AU the lead with under two minutes remaining in the half. The Saxons scored five points in the final minute before going into the break with a 35-30 lead.

Marshall and Darren Miller (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) combined for an 8-0 run for Alfred University for the team's first double-digit advantage of the afternoon. Later in the half, Hicks scored 10 points as part of an 18-2 run for the Saxons, as they led by as many as 24 points with under seven minutes to play. The Soaring Eagles found some baskets of their own, but six different players for AU scored in the final seven minutes of action to secure the victory.

"We're excited to prepare for two great teams next weekend," Kaempffe said. "We know we have to get a lot better and I know our guys will do their best to make that happen."

Alfred University will next return home to host Nazareth College on Friday with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 PM.
