Fifth-Ranked Christopher Newport Posts Dominant 98-59 Triumph at Eastern Nazarene

Christopher Newport University recorded a 39-point, wire-to-wire victory Monday afternoon at Eastern Nazarene College. The Captains posted 46 points in the opening half and added 52 in the second half in the dominant victory that improved their record to 17-3 on the season.

John Krikorian's squad led 19-18 in the opening half before a 13-2 run opened the lead to a dozen. CNU went on to lead at the break, 46-29, and continued the onslaught through the second stanza. The 39-point final verdict was the largest lead of the day.

Four Captains reached double figures, led by junior All-American Jahn Hines' 24 points. Junior Trey Barber posted 19 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Freshman Scott Mullin knocked down four three-pointers in the final three minutes for a career-high 12, and fellow freshman Collin Hines registered his first career double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.

"This is just what the doctor ordered," Krikorian said following the first meeting ever of the schools. "This was our fourth straight road game, and to play like that heading into a 12-day break really was impressive. We got to play everybody, and everybody contributed to this win."

The Martin Luther King, Jr., Day matinee at the Lahue Athletic Center saw the Captains shoot 53 percent for the day (39 of 73) including seven-of-22 from three-point range (32 percent). Christopher Newport out-rebounded the Lions, 53-30. with senior Ian Anderson securing a team-high 12 boards.

The Hines brothers combined to total 34 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Jahn Hines made ten-of-18 shots, while Colin Hines sank all five of his attempts. Barber made nine-of-14 from the field, and fifth-year senior Matthew Brodie filled the stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds, six assists and a steal.

Eastern Nazarene fell to 8-10 with the loss. Kobe Jones led the Lions with 17 points, as ENC was held to 34 percent shooting for the day (24-of-70).

The Captains opened the two-game swing in the Boston area with a 90-79 victory on Saturday at Bridgewater State in Bridgewater, Mass. While the Captains were finishing their two-game trip in Quincy with the decisive win, they were again slotted fifth in the country as D3hoops.com released its weekly poll.  

Christopher Newport returns to action on Saturday, January 28th, hosting Salisbury University at the Freeman Center. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.

"We really didn't have a long break at the holidays," Krikorikan continued. "We played just before Christmas in Charlotte and then came back with our home tournament so this will be a good opportunity for us to get some rest. Classes are back in session, so our guys will have a chance to focus on academics and we'll certainly continue to sharpen the axe as we get ready for the final few weeks of the regular season."
