BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Christopher Newport University began a two-game trip to the Boston area on Saturday, and recorded a 90-79 victory over Bridgewater State University. The Captains, now 16-3, out-scored the Bears in the second half, 56-38, to erase a seven-point halftime deficit to win the first-ever meeting of the schools.

Five Captains reached double figures at the Tinsley Center, led by fifth-year senior Matthew Brodie's 20 points. Sophomore Caleb Furr posted a career-high 17 points, with a dozen coming after halftime, to help propel John Krikorian's squad.

"Caleb had his best practice of the season Friday morning before we left," Krikorian said. "He proved he deserved the chance and he took advantage of it and really stepped up when we needed it most. I don't think there's any doubt that we don't win today without his performance off the bench."

Junior Jahn Hines (16), senior Rodney Graves (13), and sophomore Ty Henderson (11) also reached double figures as the Captains made 18 of 33 shots in the second stanza to gain the lead and finish off the stubborn Bears. CNU shot just 36 percent (13 of 36) in the opening half. Bridgewater State, now 11-5, held a 41-34 edge at the intermission, and the Bears were led by freshman point guard Dante Kikuba's 30-point performance.

"I warned everybody about Kikuba after we watched him on film," Krikorian continued. "He's a dynamic young talent and we did a bit better job on him in the second half than we did in the first." Kikuba made 12 of 18 shots, dished out five assists, pulled down six rebounds and also posted two steals.

The squads exchanged the lead 11 times in the matinee, and the Bears held an early nine-point advantage, 16-7. The Captains pulled ahead thanks to an 11-0 run but never led by more than four in the first half. BSU bounced back to take a seven-point lead to the locker room at the break. The second half saw the Bears lead most of the way, but Hines' layup with 3:37 left gave CNU a 75-74 edge, and the Captains did not trail again. Christopher Newport closed out the game on a 17-5 run, and the 11-point final verdict proved to be CNU's biggest lead of the day.

BSU out-rebounded CNU, 43-33, with Brodie leading the Captains on the boards with eight as well as in scoring with 20. Hines, who was held to five-of-15 shooting, registered eight assists for Christopher Newport.

"Jahn Hines again showed how he can contribute without necessarily scoring," Krikorian said. "He's developed his game and had we finished off a few more buckets he could have easily had a double-double today." Hines finished with 16 points, four rebounds, as well as eight assists.

Christopher Newport completes its trip to the Boston area on Monday, playing at Eastern Nazarene College. Tip-off time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. It will also be the first meeting ever with the Lions of ENC.
