ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) tallied 17 points, including eight in a 15-7 run over the final seven minutes, as the second-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outlasted No. 24 Guilford 59-56 in ODAC action on Saturday evening.

How it Happened:

  • Talbert nailed a three-pointer to start the scoring 20 seconds into the contest before five straight points by the Quakers gave the visitors a two-point advantage. Three free throws by junior Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) returned the lead to the Yellow Jackets. A layup by senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) made it a three-point lead for R-MC before GC used an 8-2 spurt to go up 13-10 with 11:40 left in the first half. A triple by Coble capped a 9-4 run as the Yellow Jackets took a 19-17 lead with seven minutes remaining. Talbert would hit two free throws late as the game was tied 27-27 at the break. Neither team led by more than three in the first half. Freshman Keishawn Pulley Jr. (Louisa, Va./St. Christopher's) hit three treys and led R-MC with nine points.
  • The Quakers had a 15-6 spurt to start the second half, leading 42-33 with 13 minutes remaining. Freshman Jabril Robinson (Derwood, Md./South Kent Prep) had two layups, Talbert sank two free throws and Coble buried a three-pointer to tie the game at 42-42 with 10:25 left. After a GC free throw. Mallory hit a jumper in the lane as R-MC took its first lead in the second half at 44-43 with 8:45 remaining. Following a pair of treys by the Quakers that made it 49-44, Pulley hit a jumper and Robinson made a three-pointer to level the score at 49-49 with 6:17 left. After a layup by GC, Talbert hit a triple to put the home team on top for good at 52-51 with 3:20 remaining. With the shot clock running down, Talbert made a long desperation trey to give R-MC a 55-51 lead with 1:51 left. A triple by the Quakers made it a one-point game at 55-54 with 1:18 remaining. Coble hit both ends of a one-and-one with 17 seconds left to make it 57-54. A layup by GC with 6.2 remaining made it a one-point contest at 57-56. Talbert hit two free throws with 4.3 seconds left and GC missed a three-pointer at the buzzer as R-MC recorded the 59-56 victory.

  • R-MC had four players score in double figures for the fourth time in the past five games. Along with 17 by Talbert, Robinson put up a dozen while Coble and Pulley both chipped in 11.
  • Mallory has 1,226 career points, placing him 27th on R-MC's career scoring list.
  • Talbert has 1,024 career points, standing in 40th on R-MC's career scoring list.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 17-0 advantage in fast break points.
