GRINNELL, Iowa – A tough afternoon shooting the ball combined with an opponent that withstood numerous rallies resulted in a 93-83 men's basketball setback by Grinnell College to visiting Lawrence University Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers made just 36.3 percent of their shots at Darby Gymnasium and were 23.1 percent from 3-point land. Aiden Gilbert '23 did have a hot hand for Grinnell (6-8, 2-4 Midwest Conference) by scoring a season-high 37 points. Also in double digits were Dillon Gestring '25 with 17 points and David Bluder '25 with 10.

Brady Vest '23 added six rebounds and Gestring and Nicholas Courtney '26 added five each. Dean Mazlish '23 distributed three assists and Tolu Johnson '25 posted career-highs of three blocks and three steals.

Lawrence (6-9, 3-3 MWC) shot out to a 4-0 lead and cruised from there for a 46-31 halftime cushion. Twice early in the second half the Vikings went up by 13, but the hosts slowly crept back and closed within three at 63-60 on Gilbert's free throws with 7:26 remaining.

Lawrence pulled away again, going up by 11 with 6:20 left before another Grinnell spurt. Gestring made a layup and Tate McLean '23 a 3-pointer to cut the lead to six. After the Vikings scored, Gilbert drove for consecutive layups to bring Grinnell within 73-69 at the 4:34 mark.

However, Lawrence followed with a five-point run and never looked back to earn its first win at Grinnell since the 2009 campaign.

Grinnell is at home again Wednesday when Monmouth College visits Darby Gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. game.
