Cortland Men's Comeback Falls Just Short in 55-51 Loss at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, PA. – Cortland cut a 13-point deficit to two over the final six minutes but couldn't complete the comeback as the Red Dragons fell to host Juniata College, 55-51, in the championship game of the Eagles' Doc Greene Tournament. Cortland had its seven-game winning streak snapped and is now 9-2. Juniata improved to 8-4.
 
Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) and Kareem Lubin (Monroe/Washingtonville) were each named to the all-tournament team. Grunder led Cortland with 17 points, nine rebounds and a career-high five blocked shots. Lubin finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
 
Cam Williams (Rome/Rome Free Academy) scored 10 of his 12 points in the final two minutes to get Cortland within striking distance. Humberto Cabrera (Millbrook) finished with four assists and five rebounds and Aaron Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) grabbed a career-best seven rebounds.
 
Grunder finished the two-day tournament with 34 points and 18 rebounds, in the process moving into second place on Cortland's career rebounding list with 766 boards and ninth place on the school's career scoring chart with 1,319 points. Grunder passed Justin Cooper (751) for second on the rebounding chart during Thursday's opening-round win versus Pitt Greensburg. He trails on Jon DeHay, who grabbed 913 rebounds from 1997-2002. Jesse Winter is Cortland's career scoring leader with 1,525 points from 2009-13.
 
Chase Husted and Nick Rigby led Juniata with 16 points apiece. Husted was 8-for-15 from the floor and pulled down five rebounds. Ross Conway totaled 10 rebounds, six points and two steals and Mason Hardy had three assists, three steals and four rebounds.
 
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half. Juniata led 18-14 at halftime as each team shot less than 30 percent from the floor and combined to make just 1-of-20 shots from 3-point range (Cortland 1-of-9, Juniata 0-of-11). The hosts extended their lead to 37-26 with just under nine minutes remaining and held a 43-30 advantage with 5:58 left. The Eagles' lead was at 10 points, 48-38, when Hardy hit a 3-pointer with 2:19 remaining.
 
Williams scored the game's next seven points – a layup with 1:55 left, a 3-pointer at the 1:18 mark and a layup with 46 seconds remaining- to pull Cortland within three at 48-45. On Juniata's next possession, Conway hit a step-back 3-pointer with the shot clock about to expire to give the hosts a 51-45 lead with 12 seconds left. Grunder hit a 3-pointer with eight ticks remaining to cut the deficit to three. Hardy sank both ends of a 1-and-1 with six seconds left to push the lead to five and Williams nailed a trey with three seconds left to make it 53-51. Kyle Ruggery secured the win for Juniata with two free throws with about a second remaining.
 
Cortland finished the game shooting 36 percent overall and 35 percent from 3-point range, including 7-for-14 in the second half. Juniata shot 35 percent from the field and 16 percent (3-of-19) from the arc, along with 12-of-14 free throw shooting.
 
Cortland will host the University of Scranton in a non-league game on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 4 p.m.
