Montclair State Tops William Paterson For Seventh Straight Win

Haledon, NJ – The Montclair State men's basketball, who are receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, notched their seventh straight win with a 71-61 victory over William Paterson Wednesday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • KEYON PRYCE got the Red Hawks (7-0, 3-0 NJAC) started in a big way, draining three three-pointers in the first 1:47 to give MSU a 9-2 lead. After a miss, it was MIKE JACKSON's turn as he went back-to-back on threes, extending the gap to 15-4.
  • A 7-0 spurt by William Paterson, coupled with a four-minute scoring drought, shrunk the lead to eight before KIERAN FLANAGAN stopped the run with a jumper. The Pioneers got within four, but Montclair took a six-point edge into the break after Shawn Summers Jr. hit a jumper a the buzzer.
  • The Red Hawks shot 14-of-31 (45.16%) from the floor in the first half and held William Paterson to 1-of-8 from behind the arc.
  • Consecutive three-pointers by the Pioneers early in the second period evened the game at 42 before Jadon Cepeda gave the hosts their first lead with a jumper and free throw. The back-and-forth battle saw several lead changes and ties, and a Cepeda layup pushed WPU into front 58-57.
  • AMIR WILLIAMS gave Montclair the lead back for good with a layup before STEVEN BREEMAN knocked down a big three off a Williams offensive rebound with 4:49 to go. The Pioneers got as close as five, but free throws from Jackson and Pryce sealed the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Jackson went 5-for-9 from beyond the arc, finishing with a team-high 17 points.
  • Breeman narrowly missed a double-double, going for 14 points and nine rebounds.
  • The Red Hawks snared 19 offensive boards, with Williams grabbing five in 16 minutes.
  • Montclair limited Tyreek Montgomery, William Paterson's leading scorer, to no points on 0-for-5 shooting in 24 minutes.
