Season-Opener is a Success for NYU Men's Basketball

More news about: New York University

It was an evening of debuts in Brooklyn on Tuesday night, and the first-time performers did not disappoint.

Head Coach Dave Klatsky recorded his first victory as the New York University Head Coach, and freshman Quinn Clark filled up the stat sheet as the Violets defeated Farmingdale State College 102-75 at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility.

After serving 11 years as an assistant coach at Colgate University, Klatsky guided his new team to the season-opening victory.

"Your first win is always going to be special," Klatsky said. "To see the guys play the way they did, with a lot of heart and energy, and get rewarded like this, it's just a great feeling."

Klatsky's quest was aided by another newcomer in Clark, who finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, four blocks, two steals and two assists.

"i'm not surprised by Quinn's performance," Klatsky offered. "He's been outstanding in practice. You can't replicate his toughness and I think tonight everyone got the chance to see what we've seen. His future is really bright."

Quinn connected on all seven of his field goal attempts.

"This was super exciting. Great atmosphere," Quinn said. "I plan on playing with a lot of energy going forward."

The Violets never trailed in the contest. After NYU opened a 16-point lead, 26-10, the Rams went on a streak and pulled within six, 36-30, with 5:31 left in the first half. But, NYU followed with an 18-7 run and took a 53-37 halftime lead.

Farmingdale cut its deficit to 10 points early in the second half, but NYU pushed its advantage to a game-high 31, 93-62, on Hayden Peek's three-pointer with 5:43 remaining in the game.

Peek's long-distance shot was one of a record 19 threes made by the Violets. The old team record of 17 was set against Brandeis University on February 14, 1999.

"We are going to try and take advantage of the defense, whatever they give us," Klatsky revealed. "That's a lot of three's, but you're not going to shoot 19 of 39 every night."

It was not only the newcomers in the spotlight on Tuesday, as senior captain Nikola Lipovic scored a career-high 18 points, while returners Zay Freeney (11), Cinque Stephens (11) and Holt Bashinsky (10) also reached double figures.

"It's just super exciting to come out with the new coaching staff and get a win like this," Lipovic said. "It's just a great feeling right now."

Graduate student Spencer Freedman, also making his Violet debut, led the way with a game-high eight assists while also contributing 12 points.

NYU's marksmanship was on display all evening, as the team shot 58.5% (38-65) from the field and made all seven of its free throws.

"Very big win for the team," Klatsky added. "Obviously, I'm happy to get my first win out of the way. But it's not about me. We're trying to build something here."

The Violets return to action this Saturday when they host the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Tip-off is sent for 12:00pm back at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
