Grinnell breaks school rebound record in easy win over Barclay

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's basketball team rebounded – literally – from Tuesday night's season-opening loss at Luther College.

 

The Pioneers grabbed a school-record 82 rebounds in a 155-81 victory over Barclay College Thursday night at Darby Gymnasium. The previous record for boards was set Nov. 13, 2021, with a 77-rebound performance against Lincoln Christian.

 

Grinnell's final point total is the highest for the team since scoring 172 against Providence-Manitoba on Nov. 24, 2019.

 

Brady Vest '23, Dillon Gestring '25 and Jack Ruhanen '25 all grabbed eight boards for the Pioneers, while Sean Walser '26 had seven.

 

Six players hit double-digit scoring for Grinnell (1-1), with Adam Phillips '23 leading the way with 27 on 8-of-16 shooting from 3-point land. David Bluder '25 added 22 points with the aid of five treys, Gestring had 16 points, Walser tallied 15 and Jackson Leone '25 and Dean Mazlish '23 each put in 11.

 

Zach Rosen '26 led the team with seven assists, Walser had four steals and Vest came up with three thefts.

 

Phillips hit a 3-pointer to open the game and the Pioneers never trailed, jetting out to a 21-6 edge just five minutes into the contest. They continued to cruise, leading 80-40 at halftime, and adding to that in the second stanza with a 75-41 edge.

 

The Pioneers entertain North Park University Saturday at 4 p.m.
