ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) scored 23 points and senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 assists as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated Hampden-Sydney 74-54 on Wednesday evening to extend the win streak to 17 and win the ODAC regular-season title for the fifth straight time in a full season.

How it Happened:

  • Talbert buried a pair of three-pointers in the first 90 seconds as the Yellow Jackets took a quick 6-0 lead and would never trail. After a bucket by the Tigers, Talbert hit a jumper and sophomore Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) nailed a trey as R-MC went up 11-2 with 17:20 left in the first half. Following an H-SC layup, junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Talbert had layups to give the home team a 15-4 edge with 15:30 remaining. The Tigers used a 10-0 run to pull within one before a jumper by Talbert gave the Yellow Jackets a 17-14 lead with 8:35 left. R-MC led 19-18 before two layups by Mallory, a triple by Anthony and a follow by senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) made up a 9-2 spurt as R-MC went up 28-20 with 3:50 remaining. A three-point play by sophomore Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) pushed the lead back to double digits at 33-23 with 1:40 left. Mallory banked in a three-pointer with one second remaining as the Yellow Jackets took a 38-27 lead to the locker room. Mallory paced R-MC with 13 points and Talbert added 12.
  • Two treys by Anthony and four points by Mallory made up a 10-4 run as the Yellow Jackets went up 48-31 with 14:34 remaining. After a three-pointer by the Tigers, Funderburg made a one-hander and senior Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) had a driving layup as R-MC took a 52-34 lead with 12:55 left. H-SC pulled within 12 before a steal and layup by Talbert was followed by a three-pointer by Anthony as the Yellow Jackets led 60-43 with 8:40 remaining. A jumper by Talbert and a trey by senior DaQuan Morris (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill School) gave R-MC a 20-point advantage at 65-45 with 6:50 left. Talbert hit a jumper as the lead grew to 22 at 67-45 with 5:15 remaining. Talbert had a tip-in and Mbangue scored in the paint as the advantage grew to two dozen at 74-50 with 2:15 left. H-SC had the final four points of the contest as the Yellow Jackets posted a 74-54 victory.

  • The Yellow Jackets had three score in double figures. Talbert put up 23, Mallory added 17 and Anthony scored 14.
  • Talbert went 10 for 15 from the floor and 3 for 5 on treys.
