Hope drops rematch at Trine

More news about: Hope

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title race in men's basketball remains too close to call.

Four teams, including the Hope College Flying Dutchmen, are within one game of each other with 10 days remaining

The race tightened on Wednesday after Hope fell at Trine University, 82-75, despite a game-high 26 points from junior forward Evan Thomas (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos HS).

Both Hope and Calvin have two league losses; Trine and Albion College have three each. All four teams have at least one matchup against each other among their remaining games. The Flying Dutchmen have the most MIAA games remaining because of a Monday, February 14, makeup at Kalamazoo College.

On Wednesday, Hope (15-6, 8-2 MIAA) could not match a strong first-half defensive performance that propelled the Flying Dutchmen to a 21-8 run to close the first half and a 37-27 halftime lead.

Trine shot 68 percent from the floor (17-25) en route to 55 second-half points. The Thunder also outscored Hope, 18-13, at the foul line.

Five Thunder scored in double figures, including guard Nick Bowman and forward Mitchell Geller, who shared team-high honors with 20 points apiece. Geller totaled 18 second-half points; Bowman 12.

Thomas scored 18 points after halftime. He also finished the game with seven rebounds and four assists.

Senior forward Jeff Bikus (Hawthorn Hills, Illinois / Mundelein) and senior guard Tyler George (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) chipped in 14 points apiece.

Hope looks to rebound on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 3 p.m. at Olivet College.
