Anthony Leads #1 R-MC Men’s Hoops past SU

WINCHESTER, Va. – Senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had his third double-double of the season and 10th of his career with 17 points and 10 rebounds as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team posted a 92-54 ODAC win at Shenandoah on Wednesday evening.

How it Happened:

  • The Hornets built an 8-4 lead three minutes into the contest before a three-pointer by senior Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and a layup by junior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead at 9-8. R-MC led 13-12 before sophomore Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) nailed a trey and Anthony sank two triples to spark a 15-1 run as the visitors went up 28-13 with 7:30 left in the first half. A layup by Talbert gave the Yellow Jackets a 36-20 advantage with 3:30 remaining. Another three-pointer by Robertson made it a 17-point lead at 39-22 with two minutes left. SU finished the scoring in the first half with a pair of free throws as R-MC took a 39-24 edge at intermission. Robertson hit four treys for 12 points, while Talbert added eight points with five assists.
  • SU hit a triple to start the second half before a three-pointer by Anthony and a three-point play by senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) made it 45-27. After a bucket by the Hornets, Funderburg had a layup and junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) added a free throw as the lead grew to 19 at 48-29 with 16:45 left in regulation. The Yellow Jackets led 52-36 before a three-pointer by Coble and a layup by Talbert made it 57-36 with 13:30 remaining. A hook shot by Funderburg gave R-MC a 25-point cushion at 68-43 midway through the second period. Funderburg made a free throw to push the lead to 30 at 77-47 with 5:45 left. A follow by junior Noah Lindsay (Moseley, Va./Benedictine) gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 92-53 before a free throw by SU made the final score 92-54.

  • The 92 points by R-MC were its highest point total of the season.
  • The Yellow Jackets had four players score in double figures. Talbert had 18, Anthony scored 17, Funderburg added 16 and Robertson had five triples off the bench for 15.
  • Coble matched his season and career highs with nine points.
  • R-MC shot 53% from the floor (36-68). The Yellow Jackets shot 44% (16-36) in the first half for the second straight game and 63% (20-32) in the second half. The Yellow Jackets had a 42-24 advantage on points in the paint.
  • The Yellow Jacket defense held the Hornets to 54 points. R-MC held SU to 32% shooting (19-59). R-MC was 12-31 from behind the arc (38.7%), while SU was 2-18 (11%).

  • Mallory's two blocks give him 135 for his career the third-highest total in program history and one away from Jordan Brown's second-place total of 136.

  • Anthony had seven assists to give him 644 in his career, the second-highest total in program history and the second-highest total in ODAC history.
  • Anthony had 17 points to give him 1,657 for his career, the fourth-highest total in program history.
