Hope Wins at Calvin in The Rivalry's 205th Game

More news about: Hope

A lot of numbers added up to a big road win for the Hope College men's basketball team in the 205th edition of The Rivalry.

Perhaps none was more significant in a 78-65 victory at Calvin University on Wednesday than the Flying Dutchmen committing only one of their 11 turnovers during the second half.

Hope's cool under pressure amid a raucous crowd of 2,927 at Van Noord Arena proved vital, head coach Greg Mitchell said.

"The second half was really good basketball by Hope. We had only one second-half turnover, which is amazing when you look at the caliber of team we were playing," Mitchell said. "That's who we need to be, who we have to be. We're a little shorthanded, so guys have to step up and be tougher. That's exactly what they did against a great team."

Hope leads The Rivalry, 105-100.

The Flying Dutchmen (10-4 overall) topped a fellow MIAA title contender for the second time in three days, despite the absence of two starters. On Monday, Hope defeated preseason favorite Trine University, 61-48, at home.

On a season-best, six-game winning streak, Hope remained the only unbeaten team in MIAA play. At 3-0, the Flying Dutchmen lead second-place Trine and Albion College by one game. Hope hosts Albion on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at DeVos Fieldhouse.

"This is huge, especially with the week we've had," said senior Evan Thomas (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos), who totaled a game-high 25 points. "We have three tough games this week. Guys are stepping up, filling roles, playing as tough as possible."

Against Calvin, the Flying Dutchmen took the lead for good midway through the second half with a 7-0 run capped by a Thomas layup for a 52-46 lead with 10 minutes, 19 seconds remaining.

Hope held Calvin scoreless for nearly five minutes down the stretch, allowing the Flying Dutchmen to extend their lead to 64-51 with 3:45 remaining..

Thomas finished with a game-high 25 points, including 14 after halftime, and a team-high eight rebounds.

Junior Clayton Dykhouse (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland East) also hit double figures with 18 points, 11 of which came during the second half.

Senior Jeff Bikus (Hawthorn Woods, Illinois / Mundelein) chipped in 13 points.

The Flying Dutchmen shot 44.8 percent from the field (26-58) and 90.5 percent from the foul line (19-21).

Calvin (8-6, 1-2 MIAA) was led by Luke Morrison's 20 points and Thad Shymanski's 13.

"We buckled down defensively. I think a lot of our points came in transition," Dykhouse said. "We rebounded the ball. We played together, focused on getting aggressive shots."
