Bench Scoring Key In 79-66 Win Over Wilson Tuesday

SELINSGROVE, PA (November 30, 2021) -- The Susquehanna University men's basketball team got 34 points from its bench Tuesday evening, including a career-high 15 points from senior Ryan Collins, as the River Hawks pulled away for a 79-66 win over visiting Wilson College in a game that was scheduled only Sunday evening after a cancellation of Sunday's contest with Misericordia University. 

The 15 points from Collins were more than three times his career total coming into the game, while the senior from Pittsburgh, PA went a perfect 6-of-6 from the field including drilling both three-pointers her took. He wasn't the only one to come off the bench and give SU (4-2) strong minutes, as first-years Cooper HaberernIsaiah Oluajayi and Steven Ressler along with junior Pat Corbett all contributed in the victory. Haberern nailed three triples en route to a career-high nine points, while Oluajayi played a career-high 21 minutes while adding four points and four rebounds. Ressler totaled six points on 2-of-4 shooting from deep, and Corbett came on to post three assists and no turnovers over a career-best nine minutes.

Wilson (2-4) came out of the gate fast, thanks in part to the play from Antonio Bussey, who scored 16 of his game-high 30 points in the first stanza. Wilson led by as much as five at 16:48 of the first half after a Bussey jump shot, but SU stormed back to regain the lead at 18-17 following a thunderous jam by Bussey on the previous play. The game would remain close through the final part of the opening period, as Susquehanna took a 36-31 edge into the break. Collins scored eight points in the first half in 3:09 of game time to pace SU, while senior Lukas Yurasits posted seven as well. The River Hawks shot 51.7 percent from the field in the first half. 

In the second half, the River Hawks quickly used a 9-2 run to take a 12-point advantage following a three-point play from Oluajayi. The SU lead would hover around 10 until the hosts used a 11-0 run fueled by three-pointers from Howie Rankine, Jr., Haberern and Ressler to stretch the Phoenix deficit out to 22 with 10:32 to play. The River Hawks would cruise over the last eight minutes to the win, as Wilson got as close as 13 with just under a minute to play. 

The River Hawks were strong around the rim Tuesday evening, shooting 75 percent (18-24) on shots within five feet of the rim, making 64 percent (23-36) of their two-point field goals. Yurasits finished with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting, grabbing a team-high six boards while leading all players with a +15 on the night. Rankine was everywhere for Susquehanna, adding 13 points on 6-of-8 field goals, posting five rebounds, four assists and two steals. 

Senior point guard Danny Frauenheim chalked up another nine assists to lead all players in that category, and Wes Simons finished with eight points and four rebounds. The squad shot 53.3 percent (32-6) from the floor for the game, including hitting 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) from three-point land. 

Wilson saw Bussey go 9-of-13 from the floor, making 12-of-14 at the line to get to his 30 points, adding 10 rebounds and two blocks. Darryl Garib also came off the bench to score 11 points in 14 minutes, as the Phoenix shot 40 percent (22-55) on field goal attempts but made just 19 percent from deep.
