MARIETTA, Ohio — Seth Stanley's 16-foot jumper from the left baseline with 5 seconds remaining lifted Hendrix to an 80-78 win against Wittenberg in an opening round game in the eight-team Great Lakes Invitation at Ban Johnson Field House Friday afternoon.

"I was trying to do a little curl, but they defensed it well. So, I just popped out and Alex (Conrad) found me," said Stanley, who's bucket gave Hendrix a 79-78 lead. He was fouled on the play by Harrison Gough and made the foul shot for the final 80-78 score.

Wittenberg's Rashaad Ali-Shakir tossed up a desperation jumper about five feet inside the half-court line at the buzzer. It bounced off the rim.

"That was a great play by two great players," said Coach Thad McCracken of the game-winning play. "It was one of those games where whoever had the ball last my win it. I'm just glad we had the ball last."

Stanley, who finished with 31 points, made the last five points in the game for the Warriors, who are now 4-0.

Wittenberg's Ridge Young finished with 22 points to lead his team, making nine of 10 field goals in the game. Landon Martin had 17.

"We were getting good looks," Young said. "I made the first few and my confidence got going."

The Tigers were playing their first game of the season and came in ranked 22nd in the Division 3 basketball ratings. Coach Matt Croci said it being Wittenberg's first game had nothing to do with the loss.

"We knew coming in it would be a tough game. We knew Hendrix was a good team. It was a game of runs. They just had one more that we did," Croci said.

Hendrix jumped out to an early 13-8 lead, but a 3-pointer by Landon Martin, immediately followed by a Martin steal and layup cut the lead to 15-13. A James Johson 3-pointer gave Wittenberg its first and only lead of the half at 17-16 with 10:30 remaining.

However, a 12-2 run by Hendrix gave the Warriors a 6-point lead that they maintained through the remainder of the half, taking a 41-36 lead to the lockers at intermission. Hendrix hit 13 of 23 shots (55%) in the half. Wittenberg shot 41 percent on 14 of 34 shots.

A Young drive tied the game at 41-41 with 18:46 remaining, but Hendrix wen on a 12-2 run for a 53-43 lead. Croci called a time out to regroup.

"That settled us down," Martin said of the time out. "We came back out and continued to attack."

Hendrix coach McCracken saw the change, too.

"I think they came out with more energy than us after that time out," he said.

Young gave Wittenberg a 75-73 lead and foul shot with 1:39 remaining on a hustle rebound. The ball bounced nearly to the foul line as three players fell to the floor reaching for it. However, Young came up with the ball, pivoted and drove to the basket for the score.

Hendrix's dominance at the foul line played a big role in their victory as the Warriors hit on 21 of 25 fouls shot to Wittenberg's 9 of 11. Wittenberg outrebounded Hendrix 38-31 as James Johnson pulled down 11 to lead the Tigers.

Hendrix faces Wilmington tomorrow while Wittenberg plays LaRoche.
