No. 16 Dubuque Pulls Away from Edgewood College in Second Half

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The Edgewood College Men's Basketball team went on the road to face a nationally ranked opponent in No. 16 University of Dubuque in the 2021-22 opener. The Eagles took a 32-31 lead into halftime, but Dubuque controlled the second half, resulting in a 79-62 setback for Edgewood College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles (0-1) trailed 27-17 with 6:16 remaining in the first half before they closed the half on a 15-4 run to take the lead into the break. Avery Lyons knocked down a 3-pointer to start the run. Both Lyons and Adam Baierl had five points during the stretch, while Austin Carlson gave the Eagles the lead before halftime with a 3-point make with four seconds left on the clock.

- Edgewood College shot 42.9 percent from the floor in the first half, while making 3-of-9 from deep. All three makes from 3-point range came in the 15-4 run. Jake Schroeckenthaler had nine points for Edgewood College on 4-of-6 shooting in the first 20 minutes and Lyons dished out five of his game-high seven assists in the opening half.

- The University of Dubuque (2-1) took the lead back 47 seconds into the second half and never surrendered it the rest of the way for the 17-point win. The lead remained in single digits until about the 9:00 mark when the Spartans went up 10 and they would lead by double digits the rest of the way.

- The Spartans shot the ball better than the Eagles on Tuesday, shooting 53.6 percent (30-for-56) from the floor and 50 percent (8-for-16) from 3-point range. Dubuque shot 64.3 percent (18-for-28) in the second half. Edgewood College finished the game at 48.2 percent (27-for-56), but just 20 percent (3-for-15) from deep. In addition, Dubuque had an advantage at the free throw line, making 11-of-18, while the Eagles attempted just 11 free throws, making five.

- Schroeckenthaler led all players with 21 points, while also leading Edgewood College in rebounding with six boards. He shot 10-for-14 from the floor. Eli Hartjes joined him in double figures with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Hartjes also had six assists as he and Lyons combined for 13 of the Eagles 17 assists for the game.

- The Eagles lost the rebound battle, 34-24, on Tuesday. The turnover battle was closer – 14-13 in favor of Dubuque – but the Spartans did outscore Edgewood College, 20-10, in points off of those turnovers.

THE OPPOSITION
- Three Spartans finished in double figures with Levi Scheuermann and Peter Ragen each scoring 17 points. Brock Simon added 14 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Dubuque now leads the all-time series against the Eagles, 7-1. The Spartans have won the last five.
