Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (11/11/2021) - Graduate forward Donaven Spencer (Sicklerville, N.J.) recorded his first double-double of the 2021-2022 season with 11 points and 14 rebounds, but the performance was not enough to bring the Gwynedd Mercy University (2-1) the victory in tonight's contest with Alvernia University (3-1) left the Griffin Complex with an 80-70 victory. Spencer was one of four Griffins in double figures as he was joined there by sophomore guard Aziz Parker (Westhampton, N.J.) (17 points), graduate guard Matt O'Connor (Philadelphia, Pa.) (11), and senior guard Ty Jones (Harlem, N.Y.) (11); Parker finished 6-of-13 (.462) from the floor with three three-point baskets (3-of-6, .500) and a pair of free throws (2-of-2, 1.000) in excess of five rebounds and a team-high three assists.

Parker and O'Connor got the Griffins going early as Gwynedd Mercy University stayed on the Golden Wolves heals early and assumed a 16-14 (10:26) advantage on a Parker three-pointer midway through the opening half. A Jones jumper briefly gave Gwynedd Mercy University a 18-14 (9:53) lead, but the score would knot at 24-24 (6:05) and again at 26-26 (5:09), before Alvernia University closed the half with a 15-6 run. The Golden Wolves kept their distance at the start of the second half; it would be a three-point basket from senior guard Jaye'Lyn Peebles (Chester, Pa.) that finally reduced the difference to single digits, 52-45, with 12:29 left to play. A minute and a half later (10:56), an O'Connor three evened the affair at 52-52. Unfortunately, the Golden Wolves broke from the stalemate with a slight advantage as they paced the Griffins to a 71-61 (1:43) spread and hit their closing free throws to secure an 80-70 victory.

Gwynedd Mercy University plays next on Tuesday, November 16, when they visit Arcadia University for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off to the Battle of 309.
