Muskies hit 100, romp past Finlandia for non-conference win

Lakeland University put up a 60-point first half and topped the 100-point mark for the game in breezing past Finlandia (Mich.) University 101-66 Tuesday night in a non-conference men's basketball matchup at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

Six players scored in double figures and the Muskies never trailed in improving to 5-4 overall on the season. Lakeland scored a season-high for points and also defeated Finlandia for the 11th straight time in the teams' series.

The Muskies opened the game on a 10-2 run and kept building the lead through the game's first 25 minutes. Lakeland repeatedly beat the Lions down the court for easy baskets, shooting 61.0% (25 of 41) in the first half and scoring 18 points on the fast break on the way to a 60-26 halftime lead.

Finlandia (0-4 overall) was able to play to a near-draw in the second half as the Muskies substituted freely. Lakeland still built the lead to as high as 41 at 80-39 with more than 11 minutes to play before the Lions scrapped to get a tad closer late. The only drama as the time wound down was whether the hosts would top the 100-point mark, but after being held without a basket for nearly four minutes the Fish hit the mark when Peyton Moldenhauer (Fr.-Randolph, Wis.) rolled in a 15-foot jumper for the final points.

Six players scored in double figures for the Muskies led by Cam Jaeger (Fr.-Oostburg, Wis.) with 17 points. Maxwell Alfred (So.-Baton Rouge, La.) also scored a career-high 15 points off the bench and Earl Lewis (Jr.-Madison, Wis.) added 14 off the bench as Lakeland's reserves piled up 48 points.

Trenton Nickel (Sr.-Kiel, Wis.) also added 14 points and Tylan Huff (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and Jequan Pegeese (Sr.-Beloit, Wis.) both scored 11 points. Jaeger, Greg Barber (Sr.-Miami, Fla.) and Matt Sechman (Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) all finished with six rebounds and Lewis added five assists.

The Muskies shot 52.8% as a team, making 38 of 72 shots, and also hit 11 of 31 (35.5%) from three-point range. Lakeland also outscored the Lions 48-34 in the paint.

Dylan Underwood scored 13 points to lead the Lions, who shot 32.1% (27 of 84). Finlandia also made just 6 of 24 from three-point range (25.0%) and committed 19 turnovers.

Lakeland returns to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play next when it hosts Edgewood College for a two-game series this weekend beginning Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gym.
