Piedmont halts Covenant win streak in overtime

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Zack Allen had a career-high 24 points, but the Covenant men's basketball team saw its four-game win streak halted with a 69-62 overtime loss to Piedmont on Saturday afternoon in USA South action inside Barnes PE Center.

Covenant (7-4, 3-1 USA South) led for over 31 minutes of the game but could not close out the visiting Lions (6-6, 3-3 USA South) as the teams split their season series.

Allen gave Covenant a 55-52 lead with his sixth 3-pointer of the day with 2:59 remaining in the second half. Piedmont answered with a 3-pointer from Ryan Jolly with a minute left to tie the score and both teams missed on potential game-winning shots in the final 36 seconds.

In overtime, it was a pair of 3-pointers from Piedmont's Orry Clements-Owens that gave the Lions the lead for good. Clements-Owens' triple with 2:19 left snapped a 57-57 tie and he added another 3-pointer with 39 seconds left to give the Lions a 65-59 lead. Will Crumly got Covenant within three (65-62) with a 3-pointer of his own moments later, but Piedmont made all four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Covenant had won the previous six meetings with Piedmont.

Allen was 9-of-13 from the field with six 3-pointers to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Crumly had a second straight double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Chris Barnette added eight points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.

Covenant was stymied on offense for most of the game by the Piedmont defensive effort. The Lions forced the Scots into 26 turnovers and converted those into 22 points. Covenant connected on just 35.4 percent (11-of-31) from the field in the second half and overtime.

The Scots built a double-digit lead in the first half and led by three (34-31) at the half. A 14-2 run over a span of three-plus minutes, gave Covenant its largest lead of the game at 19-9 with 11:50 left. Barnette scored all eight of his points during that run.

Covenant made 40.4 percent (23-of-57) for the game with 12 3-pointers and outrebounded Piedmont, 43-24. The Lions hit 45.8 percent (27-of-59) with nine 3-pointers.

Clements-Owens finished with 17 points to lead Piedmont, while Justin Quick had 15 points, seven assists, six steals, and five rebounds. Jolly added 16 points and six rebounds.

Covenant travels to LaGrange on Thursday for a USA South contest. Tip-off inside Mariotti Gym is set for 7 p.m.
