Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 9, 2020 – The No. 11-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team was limited to just one field goal in the final 9:25 in a 73-68 loss at No. 6 Emory University Sunday in Atlanta. 

Junior Jack Nolan's corner three made it 62-53 with 9:25 left, but a 13-0 run gave Emory their first lead of the game with 5:19 to play. Senior DeVaughn Rucker's lay-up with 53 seconds left cut the advantage to 70-68. 

Nick Stuck made a free-throw with five seconds left, but Nolan turned the ball over with one second left. Nolan was called for a foul on the ensuing play, and WashU head coach Pat Juckem was issued a technical foul. Romin Williams made 2-of-4 free-throws to end the game.

Emory improved to 17-3 and 7-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while WashU dropped to 16-4 and 7-2 in the league. Brandeis, Emory and WashU are locked in a three-way tie for first place in the UAA standings, 

Nolan led all scorers with 30 points on a career-high seven threes, while sophomore Justin Hardy had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Senior Hank Hunter had 10 points and a season-high nine rebounds in his first start since Jan. 17.

WashU shot 37.1 percent (23-62) from the field, and outrebounded Emory 44-36. The Bears had a 20-9 advantage in second-chance points.

WashU jumped out to an 8-0 advantage in the opening four minutes, scoring six points in the paint. Emory head coach Jason Zimmerman was called for a technical foul with 16:50 left, igniting a 5-0 run by the Eagles.

Junior Payden Webb and Nolan canned threes to highlight an 8-0 run as WashU extended its lead to 16-5 and forced an Emory timeout with 12:53 left. Nolan followed with back-to-back threes to make it 28-14.  

WashU took a 41-33 lead to half as Nolan led all scorers with 17 points on four threes. The Bears outrebounded Emory 25-14 and had an 18-2 advantage in second-chance points.

Emory cut the lead to five (47-42) with 14:38 to play, but Hunter scored a pair of buckets in the paint to get the lead back to nine.

Stuck led Emory with 19 points and six boards, while Matthew Schner (13) and Williams (11) also scored in double figures. The Eagles had a 21-7 advantage in points off turnovers and 18-7 in bench points.

WashU hosts Case Western Reserve on Friday, Feb. 14, at 8 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Emory, 49-16, and the Eagles swept the season series for the second-straight year … Nolan moved into fourth all-time at WashU in threes made (196) and 24th on all-time scoring list (1,067) … WashU is 3-2 against ranked teams this season, with both losses coming against Emory.
