COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital Center saw its best crowd of the season as the purple packed in for another edition of the best rivalry in Ohio. The Capital University men's basketball team not only completed the sweep over its rival, Otterbein University but also helped Head Coach Damon Goodwin in a major career milestone in the process. Capital downed the Cardinals, 74-61.
BUSINESS FIRST
- From start to finish, Capital held control of the game and never let up. Capital jumped out in front after taking a 15-point lead into the locker room after shooting 51.6 percent from the field and forcing Otterbein into twice as many turnovers.
- Otterbein was unable to get its 3-point game going after going 0-for-4 in the first and just 3-for-9 in the second. Cap found success from long range in the first half (4-10) but cooled off in the second.
- One of those four first-half 3-pointers helped build a six-point lead early when Ryan Roth let one fly from the wing. He later hit a second as time expired in the first half to send Cap into the break with a 41-26 lead.
- Cap built its first double-digit lead off the play of Tyler Schreck on the inside followed by a Ganiyu Yahaya 3-pointer, push Cap to a 14-point lead with 5:14 to go in the first.
- Otterbein outscored Cap by just one basket in the second half, 35-33.
- Tyler Schreck scored 13 of his 24 points in the second half and hit all five field-goal attempts plus three free throws.
- Cap's largest lead was recorded at 24 points at the 12:03 mark of the second half.
KEY NUMBERS
- After committing eight turnovers in the second half, Otterbein turned the ball over just five more times throughout the game. However, Capital cashed in and scored 21 points on those miscues.
- Capital finished the game shooting 51 percent (26-51) from the field while Otterbein shot just 41.4 percent.
- Tyler Schreck tied his season and career-high point total (24) and also notched his fourth double-double of the season after tallying 10 boards. Three of those double-doubles have come in his last five games.
- Ganiyu Yahaya finished with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting. He also collected four steals.
- Freshman Griffin Doseck led all reserves with nine points and five rebounds off the bench. He also had a career-high five blocks on the defensive end.
- Dallas Patrick led Otterbein with 20 points and also added eight rebounds. Mo Beavers had 15 points, while Nick Koontz had an eight-point, nine-rebound, and five-assist night.
- Capital has now defeated Otterbein in 11 straight contests on the hardwood. The last Otterbein win came in the 2014-15 season.
THE BIG 4-0-0
- Head Coach Damon Goodwin also earned the chance to celebrate an individual milestone with the win. Saturday's victory marked career win number 400 in his coaching career.
- Goodwin came into the season 11 wins shy of the milestone and continues to build on his resume which also includes being the all-time winningest men's basketball coach in Capital history, is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year, winner of multiple OAC titles and NCAA Tournament appearances, and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2009.
UP NEXT
Capital is now tied for third place in the OAC team standings behind its 11-8 overall record and 7-5 OAC ledger. The Crusaders will now ready for a road trip to play nationally-ranked Marietta College for the second time this season. That game will be played at Ban Johnson Arena on Wednesday, February 5 at 7 p.m.
