Kaneshiro Leads Oxy Past UC Santa Cruz

LOS ANGELESRyan Kaneshiro scored the game-winning basket with 2.2 seconds left, leading the Occidental men's basketball team to a 59-57 victory over UC Santa Cruz on Thursday.

Jacob Adler drove to his left, attracted the defense, made a fake and hit Kaneshiro curling to the elbow for a 15-footer.

UC Santa Cruz got off one last half court short, but it missed off the backboard.

Evan Dray had 14 points and 16 rebounds, leading four Oxy players in double figures. Jacob Adler had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Sydney Shipp had 14 points and two steals, and Kaneshiro had 12 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Miles Mahoney and Isaak Ottmar gave the Tigers big minutes off the bench with the Tigers missing usual starters Kyle Dosa and Caleb Yellin-Flaherty

Haakon Ulrich led the Banana Slugs with 15 points. 

Oxy held UCSC to just 36 percent shooting from the field on the game. 

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 8-2 on the year.

UC Santa Cruz falls to 5-12 on the year.

Next Game: Oxy is back in action with its second SCIAC game of the season at Caltech at 7 p.m. on Monday.
