BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sophomore Jonathan Park recorded a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for visiting Nazareth Saturday as the Golden Flyers won their season opener in men's basketball, 78-69, over Buffalo State in non-conference action.

Park's point and rebound totals were both career highs. He made 7-of-9 shots from the field and also produced three blocks. He was one of four Nazareth players to score in doubles figures. Junior Kevin Underwood had a career-best 16 points. Senior Cody Green had 12 and junior Stephen Gabel had 10.

While the Golden Flyers struggled a bit with its perimeter shooting (5-for-18 from three-point range and 26-for-67 overall), they had enough firepower to overcome the Bengals, who also were competing in their season opener. A 12-2 scoring run over the final 4:30 of the first half turned a three-point lead into a 44-32 halftime lead. Isaac Nelson started the flurry with a pair of free throws. Gabel made a three-pointer and Underwood closed the run with two field goals.

Nazareth's lead grew as large as 14 points, 47-33, early in the second half on a three-pointer by Green, who went 3-for-8 from long distance. The Bengals managed to stay within striking range most of the second half, but Green made a pair of free throws with 2:41 left and Underwood made a pair of baskets and a free throw in the closing seconds to keep Nazareth in control.

Nazareth enjoyed a 45-38 rebounding edge with Gabel contributing seven and Nelson five (all offensive). Sophomore Zach Stenglein had a tough shooting night (1-for-11), but had seven assists and four steals.
