MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's basketball team broke the school record for steals in a game, posting 21 thefts while cruising to a 93-56 victory over Penn State Abington in its season opener Tuesday evening in Baldwin Gymnasium.

Eleven different Rangers pocketed at least one steal as Drew surpassed the former record of 18 set in a 73-63 win over Salve Regina on Jan. 5, 2001. Drew forced the Nittany Lions (0-1) into 30 turnovers.

Offensively, five players scored in double figures to power a balanced scoring effort for the Drew, which pulled away with a 40-14 run over the final 13 minutes. Twelve different Rangers scored a point.

The Blue and Green enjoyed a tremendous shooting night, connecting on 55.6% of their 3-point attempts. They finished 15-for-27 from beyond the arc, tying for fifth in school history for the most 3's in a game. Overall, Drew shot 52.2 percent for the night.

Senior guard Riley Collins led the way with a strong all-around performance, shooting 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and posting 17 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Junior forward Lybrant Robinson notched 15 points and four assists in his Drew debut while sophomore guard David Gervase netted 13 points in just 13 minutes off the bench, shooting 5-for-7 and 3-for-3 from distance. Freshman forward Howard McBurnie, Jr. also shot 5-for-7 and registered 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

Senior guard Cole Hanntz chipped in with 10 points while junior forward Malachi Walker, Jr. tied a career-high with six blocked shots - a mark that ties him for fifth in school history. Senior guard Michael Boice and sophomore guard Jake Tarabokija contributed with three steals apiece.

Abington scored the first five points of the game, but the Rangers used a 12-2 run midway through the half to open up a double-digit lead. The Lions whittled it down to three, but that's when Drew caught fire from the outside, knocking down five straight 3-pointers to power a 15-0 run. Collins kicked off the spurt before Gervase knocked down back-to-back triples. Collins and McBurnie capped the run to make it a 36-18 game with 7:16 on the first-half clock. The Rangers upped their lead to as much as 21 before taking a 47-32 lead into the locker room.

The Lions pulled to within 11 (53-42) with 13:56 left, but that's as close as they would get. The Rangers responded with a decisive 11-0 run to double their advantage with 10:10 remaining. Once again, Drew dialed long distance to power a big run as Collins, Walker, and Boice all connected from downtown. The Rangers would lead by at least 20 the rest of the way.

Drew continues its season this weekend when it hosts the Larry Horner C'40 Rose City Classic. The Rangers take on Old Westbury on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. before facing either Hamilton or TCNJ at 1 or 3 p.m. on Sunday.
