Men’s Basketball Routs Hendrix to Advance to SAA Semis

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Sewanee men's basketball team used an 82-64 victory over 6-seed Hendrix College Friday night in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Southern Athletic Association Men's Basketball Tournament from Alumni Gymnasium on the campus of Centre College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Despite Hendrix having a 5-2 lead early, Sewanee erased that quickly with an 8-0 run to lead 10-5 with 14 minutes remaining in the opening half.

-The Tigers started to separate themselves from the Warriors midway through the half. The Purple and Gold made the lead double digits thanks to back-to-back treys by Matt Lee and Cam Caldwell. Sewanee led 27-14 with 5:30 left in the half.

-Sewanee led 34-21 at the break, but Hendrix made it a single-digit affair with 9:28 left with a Trey Rouse four-point play, 51-44.

-From there, Sewanee put the contest away with an 11-1 run to lead 62-45 with seven minutes remaining.

TWENTY: THE BIG 2-0
-The Tigers clinched 20 wins in a season for the first time since 2016, and it is the fourth time in program history the program has accomplished this feat.

-Prior to 2016, Sewanee also won 20 games in 1998 and a school record 23 in 1973, and in both of those seasons, the program earned a berth in the NCAA Championships.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Luke Smith led all scorers with 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting. The sophomore added four assists and three boards and steals each.

-Cam Caldwell posted 19 points, six assists, four rebounds and two blocks.

-Hunter Buescher added 12 points, while Matt Lee recorded a career-high 12 rebounds and scored eight points for Sewanee.

HENDRIX KEY STATISTICS
-Seth Stanley led the Warriors with 20 points on 6-of-11 from downtown.

UP NEXT
Making their third semifinal appearance in SAA Tournament history, the Tigers will next face Berry Saturday evening. On the other side of the bracket, Centre and Oglethorpe will play the other semifinal game.
