ONEONTA, NY – Visiting Nazareth had a solid night shooting the ball as it made 56% from the field, 54% from three with 13 treys, and 88% from the free-throw line in a 100-84 win over Hartwick Friday night at Lambros Arena.
With the setback, Hartwick slips to 7-11 overall and 3-6 in the Empire 8. Nazareth has now won nine in a row and improves to 13-3 and 7-0 in league play.
Brandon LaForest (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) led all players with 21 points. He added five assists, five rebounds, and a pair of three-pointers. Pat Garey (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) connected for 19 points. He tied for a game-high with five triples and added four steals and three assists. Kyle Bradshaw (Tinton Falls, NJ/Brookdale CC) contributed 14 points and he tied for a team-high with seven boards. Austin Haskell (Kirkwood, NY/Susquehanna Valley) was the fourth Hawk in double figures with 13 points. He also grabbed four rebounds.
The Flyers would miss their first two shots of the game in the opening minute, but they would make eight of their next 11 shots from the field, which included six three-point baskets, to open up a 24-9 lead over the Hawks less than seven minutes into the contest. The Hawks were unable to trim the gap to single digits throughout the rest of the half. Naz grabbed its biggest lead 52-34 with 1:13 left until the break before a Bradshaw jumper cut it to 16.
LaForest netted 10 in the opening half for the Hawks with Garey adding nine. The Golden Flyers would sink nine three-point buckets in the half.
After the visitors built their advantage to 20 twice early in the second half, the Hawks used a 13-5 run to cut the margin to 12 points, 63-51, with under 15 minutes to play. Garey scored eight with LaForest scoring the other five in the spurt. A 9-1 Naz run followed and the lead was back up to 20. The advantage would swell to as many as 23 before the Hawks cut it to 14 with 2:37 remaining. It would be as close as 'Wick would get as Naz scored the final six over the last 1:13 to close it out.
The Hawks finished the game shooting 43% (29-for-68) from the field and 42% (8-for-19) from downtown. They made only 62% (18-for-29) of their free throws.
