W&J sees comeback fall short in 78-70 loss to Saint Vincent

More news about: Washington and Jefferson

LATROBE, Pa. -- Zach Queen (Jeannette, Pa./Hempfield Area) netted a career-best 26 points to fuel Washington & Jefferson men's basketball, but it proved to not be enough in W&J's 78-70 setback to Saint Vincent on Monday night in Latrobe, Pa.

Despite taking the loss tonight, the Presidents remain in second in the PAC standings with a 6-3 record (8-10 overall). Saint Vincent, on the other hand, improves to 16-2 overall and stays perfect in conference play at 9-0.

The Red & Black struggled to find their footing in the first half, allowing the home team to go ahead 33-20 at halftime. W&J's shooting was the primary cause of these struggles, as the Presidents went 8-for-31 (25.8 percent) from the field in the half, compared to Saint Vincent's 14-for-34 (41.2 percent) mark.

W&J began to turn things around in the second half, opening the stanza with three consecutive Queen three-pointers to cut the deficit to 33-29. This mini-run started the Red & Black's comeback attempt.

The Presidents added to this run by scoring 18 of the first 23 points in the half to knot the score at 38-38. A Cameron Seemann (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) layup with 13:43 on the clock gave the Red & Black a 42-38 advantage over the Bearcats.

At that point, the two teams started to trade points until SVC reeled off an 11-0 run to storm ahead 56-45 with 9:19 left in the game. The Bearcats' lead grew as high as 13 points, 74-61, with 3:11 on the clock.

Despite facing a double-digit deficit on the road, W&J continued to battle until the final whistle. Another Queen trey put the Presidents within six, 76-70, with 45 seconds left, but that's as close as they would get.

The source of W&J's second-half comeback was the team's stellar three-point shooting. As a team, the Red & Black went 12-for-32 (37.5 percent) from behind the arc, which are the second-most treys they have made in a game this year.

Queen was the Presidents' most effective shooter from deep, going 8-for-12 (66.7 percent) on three-point attempts, the most made three-pointers by a W&J player since Doug Johnson knocked down a school-record nine in the 2014-15 season.

Queen has been on fire of late, scoring at least 18 points in his last three games, setting or tying a career high in each. The sophomore guard's 26 points are the most scored by a President this season.

Joining Queen with a stellar game was Seemann, who ended the day with 23 points and six boards. The sophomore has tallied 20-plus points a team-high five times this season after not doing it once last year. Seemann paces the team with 15.6 points per game.

Alexander Skowron (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and Nicholas Campalong (Sewickley, Pa./Ambridge) both excelled on the glass with six and five boards, respectively.

The Presidents will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 23, to challenge Geneva at home at the Henry Memorial Center at 8 p.m.
