Hunter’s Double-Double Leads WashU Past NYU

New York, N.Y., Jan. 18, 2019 – Junior center Hank Hunter dominated the post with a career-high 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team to a 91-70 road win over New York University Friday night at Hunter College in New York.

Junior forward DeVaughn Rucker added 18 points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Jack Nolan had 15 points on 4-of-4 three-point shooting andfreshman forward Justin Hardy dropped in 13. 

WashU shot 51.4 percent (36-70) from the field, including 9-of-20 from three-point range. The Bears outrebounded the Violets 40-31 and had a 46-28 advantage in points in the paint. 

WashU won its second-consecutive game to improve to 9-6 and 2-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while NYU dropped to 6-9 and 0-4 in the UAA.

Hunter had the hot hand for WashU early in the contest, and his tip-in with 10:17 left tied the contest at 17-17. Hunter's bucket ignited a 13-0 run as WashU took the 28-17 advantage.

Freshman guard Charlie Jacob canned a three-pointer to extend WashU's lead to 31-19 with 5:47 before half. Nolan's four-point play with six seconds left made it 44-29 at halftime.

Hunter had 14 points and eight rebounds in the first half, while Hardy added 11. WashU shot 48.6 percent (18-37) from the field.

Hunter scored on back-to-back possessions as WashU held a 52-36 lead, and then a three-point play by Rucker made it 55-41 with 15:20 to play. The Bears put the game out of reach with an 11-0 run as junior guard Matt Nester's three extended the lead to 66-43.

Bobby Hawkinson led NYU with 15 points, while Jule Brown had 14 and Dom Cristiano added 10. The Violets shot 41.4 percent (24-58) from the field and had 18 turnovers.

WashU takes on Brandeis University on Sunday, Jan. 20, at Noon (ET).
