Clamage Erupts for 41 for #22 Rochester in 78=70 Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. –Ryan Clamage scored a career high 41 points in 35 minutes to lead the University of Rochester to a 78-70 victory over Carnegie Mellon University at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday night.

Clamage sank 16 of 25 from the field, one of five on three-pointers, and made eight of 10 from the foul line. He grabbed six rebounds and blocked one shot. Jacob Wittig scored 10 points and added six assists for Rochester. The Yellowjackets snapped a two-game losing streak. Rochester is 12-3 overall, 2-2 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester is ranked No. 22 in the current D3hoops.com poll. 

Zach Howarth led Carnegie Mellon with 16 points. He was three of nine from the field and nine of 10 at the foul line. Seth Henry and Colin McNeil scored 11 apiece. CMU is 8-7 overall, 3-1 in the UAA.

Rochester is one game out of first place in the UAA standings. Carnegie Mellon is tied with the University of Chicago and Brandeis at 3-1. UC lost to Brandeis, 72-71, in Waltham, MA on Friday night. Washington-St. Louis, Emory, and Rochester are all tied at 2-2. Case Western Reserve is 1-3, and NYU is 0-4. On Sunday, Carnegie plays at Emory in Atlanta. Rochester will host Case Western Reserve.

The Yellowjackets built a nine-point lead, 47-38, on a Clamage layup five minutes into the second half. CMU used a 14-2 run over five minutes to push in front, 52-49. Ethan Miller scored five of the 14 points and Henry canned a trey.

Patrick Benka's three-pointer put Rochester in front, 58-56, with eight minutes to go. Alexander Gamble made two free throws and then Clamage scored UR's next 10 points. His jumper in the paint gave Rochester a 70-63 lead with 3:30 on the clock.

He is the first Rochester men's player to score more than 40 points in a game in six years. John DiBartolomeo scored 42 points on March 2, 2013, against Fitchburg State in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. Four Rochester players have scored 40 or more. The 41 points is the fifth highest single-game total.
