LOS ANGELES — The Occidental men's basketball team's winning streak was snapped at 13 in a 63-60 loss to defending SCIAC Champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Rush Gym on Wednesday.

Oxy shot poorly from the field against a tough CMS defense in the first half, falling behind 31-20 on just 30 percent shooting. In the second half the Tigers slowly started to chip away and were finally able to tie the game with 7 minutes to go on a layup by Zach Baines.

Baines finished with 17 points and seven rebounds on 4 for 9 shooting. He started attacking the rim during Oxy's second-half run, getting to the free throw line for a perfect 8 for 8.

JD Levine quickly countered after the Tigers tied the game with a three and the lead bounced between 3 and 5 for most of the remainder of the game.

Oxy had one last push in the last minute when it was trailing by five. The Tigers got a stop and Ryan Kaneshiro pushed the ball up the court and found himself open for a three and knocked it down.

Kaneshiro, who leads the SCIAC in assists and is known for his ability to defend and rebound, hadn't attempted a 3-point shot all season.

The Tigers forced a miss at the other end, but George Walker made the play of the game on an offensive rebound, forcing Oxy to foul and eliminating the Tigers chance at a full possession.

If the Tigers would have come up with the ball, they would have had roughly 14 seconds to get a quality look to tie or go ahead.

Jacob Adler, who finished with 10 points, hit one of his two threes with 3 seconds left, cutting the lead to 61-60. The Tigers fouled, but CMS made both free throws.

Oxy threw the ball deep to Austin DeWitz who handed off to Adler for a reasonable look from 22 feet to tie, but it missed wide right as time expired.

Caleb Yellin-Flaherty finished the game with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, and was 6 for 11 from the field. DeWitz added 13 points, six rebounds and three assists, and Kaneshiro finished with eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Nicolas Segura Dobjanschi scored a game-high 23 points for CMS and Miles President added 15 points.

Season Impact: Oxy falls to 13-1 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC play.

CMS improves to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC.

Next Game: Oxy is back in action against Cal Lutheran on Saturday at 4 p.m.
